How do we explain the death of a pet to our children?

The death of a pet is probably the first experience of death that children encounter, therefore the way in which we as parents handle and explain it to our children will have a lasting effect upon them and their view of death.

It is well accepted that if the children are close to their pets, that when the pet dies the child will express the feeling of loss and grief.
